Digital image information, in the form of images captured by a camera or images generated by computer graphics techniques, is an integral part of the modern information society. Automated analysis and synthesis of such image information is used in a plethora of systems such as industrial automation, surveillance, internet services, computer games, and advanced computer interaction.
To a large extent the techniques for analyzing and synthesizing images rest on a common methodological framework. Understanding this framework is a crucial element in the training of engineers in order for them to be able to take part in applying, and advancing, state-of-the-art methods within the field.
